Album review: Disturbed - Indestructible

Alternative metal god’s Disturbed have been well received ever since their first album, because they were different from every other alternative metal band. They weren’t afraid to mix things up a bit, and make alternative metal their territory instead of following the lead of other bands. This band has gone from strength to strength with every album it realised, improving since their first album, expanding their sound, then in 2005 with Ten Thousand Fists bring in power and intensity while touching upon a political subject without getting soft. But even in all their development they never left behind what made them Disturbed to start with; fast aggressive pounding music, with shouted and growled dark vocals provided by David Draiman (vocals).

So, the forth album from Disturbed, Indestructible, had a lot to live up to with this past behind it. It would need to be powerful, it would need to be different, but it would also need to still have that winning mix Disturbed had created from themselves from day one. It was always going to be hard to deliver this album.

It is my pleasure to announce Disturbed have achieved this and more. The album is different from the other three albums, it is very powerful but if put amidst several other alternative metal albums you could still pick out Disturbed from hard hitting guitars riffs, the aggressive drums and the dark growling lyrics. While having all this already, it is also a lot darker than the previous albums, but it is also much more aggressive than anything Disturbed have done before. The song list is primarily made up of songs relating to bad luck and misfortune giving this album a more complex and evil presence amongst the Disturbed studio albums discography.

Notable songs I feel I need to mention are Inside the Fire, the single realised from Indestructible. This song is very powerful, not only in the fast passed riffs but in the lyrics as this is the song based on a girl from Draiman’s youth; a girl who unfortunately took her life. This mix of powerful alternative metal, emotion and intensity makes this a perfect song for a single, and a great representation of the album.

The other song I will mention is the title track Indestructible. The opening song of this album beings with the sound of sirens, gun fire and bombs exploding in the distance, before the opening riff takes instant dominance, not just in the song, but in any room this song is played in. This song focuses on a war theme, while Draiman furiously announces “I’m indestructible”. The wrath of this song begins the roller-coast ride that this amazing album will take you on, and that you’ll ride many times again.

Verdict: Disturbed have always got better with every album release, and some fans may have worried that this time it may not be the case. I was one of the fans who had no fear that Disturbed would once again blow me away. Faster, more aggressive, darker, complex and even sometimes emotional. Welcome to Indestructible.
