Album: SimpleSongs - Last Day On EarthSimpleSongs is the one-man project of singer-songwriter Ken Veerman. He mixes sensitive guitar and piano songs with improvised samples. He has made a lasting impression with his live shows in his native country Belgium. In 2005 he won the Edegemse Rockrally, and was runner up at the a rock contest in Antwerp. Armed with his guitar, piano, laptop and sampler he is ready to introduce his creations to the world! Last Day On Earth only consists of five songs. Unfortunately, because they’re all so good I could easily listen to five more! The atmosphere is dark, ghost-like, and the lyrics are very good! “I did not sell my soul, I just franchised it out” is one that sticks. In Veerman’s voice you will recognise Brett Anderson and David Bowie. Not bad, hey?! Each song is different. Title track Last Day On Earth has a sample of talking men running through the entire song. They are stressed and confused, the world is coming to an end. Apologise is a love song. The lyrics are a little repetitive in this one. The beautiful We Can’t Stall For Time is accompanied by an acoustic guitar and beatbox. Breathe Fire has the piano sound that the early Suede albums are renowned for, and combined with Veerman’s voice it will give you goose bumps! Last song Process/Motion will leave you in deep thoughts; what do you do if you know everything, foresee everything and can afford everything? The answer is unknown. For now. Verdict:I can’t wait to get my hands on an entire SimpleSongs album! If this EP is anything to go by, we are in for something very special! |
