EP review: Tarball - Bite The Bullet

Tarball formed in 2004, and played their first set at a talent show where they made it to the finals and became runner-up! The ball started running and the band has played all over the Netherlands and toured in Germany in 2007. Tarball released a four-track demo in 2006, which was received well by the press. For the recording of their first EP, the band cooperated with Guido Aalbers, who has worked with Queens of the Stone Age, Live and Muse. The four man band plays a mixture of metal, grunge and rock. The use of unexpected breaks and sound effects are characteristic to the band's music.

The EP starts off with title-track Bite the Bullet, which of course fits in with this website very nicely. With a running time of 5:28, it’s the longest track of the EP. It’s got a very metal guitar sound throughout. Collide is a little lighter, though it has the same dark guitars. It reminds me of another local band we like on The Bullet: The Wounded. Maybe it’s the echo in the vocals… Judge Me has the same echo, but is a completely different song. The sound effects are used very cleverly here.

Verdict: Bite the Bullet is an EP that will definitely impress booking agents and music journalists. The songs are composed well and the overall sound is good. The vocals could be a little tighter, but I'll make sure I'll go see them play live sometime soon.
