Album: Try Drowning - A Different Kind of Winter

The four guys of Try Drowning try hard to get their band noticed by the general public and the media. This Dutch band has worked hard to establish a fanbase in their home country The Netherlands, and is currently trying to achieve this throughout Europe. Try Drowning was formed in 2003. Since then, the band has played clubs all over The Netherlands, recorded a demo and released A Different Kind of Winter, their first EP. They toured the UK for the first time in August 2006.

It is clear from the first seconds of the cd; this band rocks. Their music contains hints of metal, hardcore and emo. It’s dark like a stormy autumn evening, when thunder rolls and lightning flashes through the sky. The band describes their sound as: attack is the best defense. We are loud. We blow you away. And that is exactly what they do.

Right in the middle of the album you’ll suddenly stumble across a very different track, with lyrics that sound very familiar. It’s an electronic remix of Winter, the opening track, that has been put here to mark a transition in style on the EP. The storm has quietened down. The last three songs are significantly more quiet than the first, but are just as good. Closing track Sleeping With The Fish mostly consists of guitarnoise and similar sounds.

Verdict: Though it lasts just a little over half an hour, A Different Kind of Winter is a very varied album. Not only because of the transition halfway through the album, but also because the band combines different styles. Not bad for a first EP!
