Film: The Bourne Ultimatum

Tagline

This Summer Jason Bourne Comes Home

Thirds are always hard. When it comes to movies, the first is usually the best, the second might be ok, but can also be crappy, but a thirdd part... Well, that's more often bad than good. The past years this has changed. Pirates 3 was great, LOTR 3 was better than 2, and now we have part 3 of the Bourne sequels.

Plot

We pick up right about where The Bourne Supremacy left off: Jason Bourne is thought to have leaked information about the Treadstone upgrade Blackbriar to the press, and the CIA wants his ass. Again. Bourne goes to find the journalist who wrote the articles, only to find that the badguys are just one step behind them. The thrilling chase leads to a climax at London's Waterloo railway station. Of course Pamela Landy also returns in this film. She's the onlye one convinced that Bourne is innocent, and helps him where she can.

A character that is also returning is Nicky, played by Julia Stiles. When Bourne heads off to Spain to find out more about what's going on, she is the agent being sent to stop him. But when she see's who it is, she decides to go with him. There are a couple of hints in the movie that she and Bourne share a romantic past, but nothing gets confirmed. As Bourne finds out more and more about his past, he and Nicky get into various kinds of trouble, leading to action packed fight scenes and a breathtaking chase. Of course Bourne uses whatever he can find to knock down is opponent, from household articles to books, everything is useful. The ending is somewhat open for the end of a trilogy. Though Damon has said that he doesn't want to make a fourth part, there definitely is enough story material to make one.

Acting

Matt Damon is brilliant as Jason Bourne. From the first second of the first film, he has played this character with so much passion, that you see them as one and the same. I don't think anyone else could have done a better job! Julia Stiles is great as the mysterious and complex Nicky, whose silence sometimes speaks louder than words. She's smart and not one to mess with, but she definitely still is a girl and not a brainwashed fighting machine. And sometimes she needs a man to come to her rescue. A little romance wouldn't have been bad for Nicky, maybe it would soften her up a little. Joan Allen stars as Pamela Landy, who is on Bourne's side this time. While Julia Stiles is better here than in Supremacy, I found Joan Allen a little weaker.

Verdict: Definitely a great film! Better than The Bourne Supremacy. I know there's not going to be fourth part, but a girl can hope, right? Bring it on!
