Film: casanova

Tagline

A partially true story about lies told, virtue lost and love found

Plot

Expert womaniser and eternal flirt Casanova - who doesn't believe in true love or monogamy - wants the one woman he can't have. Not a very original setting, but always good for some fun. If you expect a true biography of the man himself, you'll be disappointed, but if you're in the mood for a film that doesn't require for all your braincells to be active, look no further.

Casanova does what he can to win the heart of Francesca Bruni, a well educated feminist that wants to be wined and dined. Of course he messes up a lot, plotting several schemes and when he managed to take a step forward, falls three steps back. But luck is on his side, or is it his charm that does the trick and gets him everything he wants? Naturally, he gets the girl in the end. That's no surprise, but the way he does it certainly is entertaining. Inquisitor bishop Pucci, played by Jeremy irons, wants Casanova hanged and does everything he can to find and catch him, his frustration and failure providing extra comical scenes.

Acting

Heath Ledger has played very different types of characters, but never fails to succeed in comedies. He is perfect to play Casanova, and pulls off both the arrogance and charm very well. His half smile makes you melt. Sienna Miller is also impressive in this role, and the two work very well together. Probably the best actor, though, is Oliver Platt, who plays the fat merchant Paprizio. The things they do to him are hilarious! Poor man. But, it all ends well for everyone.

Verdict: This will not be the film of the year, but is definitely worth watching. It's funny, the sets are beautiful and the film's fast pace and suspense means there is never a dull moment.
