Film: Clerks IITaglineNo experience necessary PlotThis is the type of movie were two people need to review it, for the simple reason that you are either a Kevin Smith fan, or you are not. I fell in love with his movies from the first time I saw Clerks back in 1994. It was black and white, low budget (the whole movie cost $27,575) and seedy in parts, but it had originality and an infectious style and humour that had me hooked. Clerks II had a much larger budget and his style has matured somewhat (well, as far as cinematography is concerned, but definitely not with his sense of humour). Love and romance was not just a punchline in this movie, it was touched on quite seriously and sincerely throughout the movie. That is definitely not to say that the same old brand of immature and sexual driven humour is not frequent in this movie, because it is. Clerks II is a continuation of the first movie as it follows best friends Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) and their search for their niche in the world. After their beloved Quick Stop is pretty much destroyed, the guys (now in their 30’s) get a job at Mooby’s, a fast-food restaurant. Dante is now engaged to a very clingy girl who is determined to leave the horrors of minimum-wage New Jersey and move in with her parents down in high-class Florida. But Randal, who can see the loss of his best friend being the death of life as he knows it, has other ideas. Needless to say, Jay and Silent Bob are back (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith), but they have changed. I won’t say how, because that would totally ruin the surprise, but don’t worry, they are the same old wacked-out duo that is featured in almost all of Smith’s movies. Verdict: Overall I give it a 8/10 as it is just as funny, if not more, than the first Clerks, and I love Kevin Smith and all his movies. Call me biased, because I am, but as I said at the start, if you love his movies, this one will be no exception. |
