Film: Underworld: Evolution

The war was not as it had seemed

Plot

Welcome once again to a world filled with Death Dealers (vampires) and Lycans (werewolves). The film starts out with a scene from the past. The Death Dealers are out to kill newly made Lycans before the full moon rises and they are harder to kill. Twin brothers Marcus and William Corvinus are the children of the forefather of both races. They have begun spreading their bloodlines to others. Because the Death Dealers fear the Lycans, they set out to kill them. William, the werewolf, has gone mad and begins turning whole villages into his own kind. After a long struggle, he is caught and hidden away in a secure location. Thus, begins the new adventure...

Selene and Michael are on the run from both the Death Dealers and Lycans after a brutal betrayal in the previous film. Now a hybrid, Michael must try to learn just what kind of power he now wields. Selene is set on protecting Michael, who now appears to be even more of a love interest than before, as they journey to discover what secrets Viktor was keeping. It’s time to get caught up in a whirlwind of action as both heroes fight to survive Marcus’ ambition to create a whole new race of hybrids alongside his brother William who now has found. What connection does Selene have to William? Will she and Michael be able to end the fighting?

Acting

Kate Beckinsale returns to play the kickass vampire, Selene. She’s even tougher in this film as she fights to survive alongside Michael. Scott Speedman also returns to play the role of Michael Corvin, a newly made hybrid who must learn what it means to wield both bloodlines of vampires and lycans. Beckinsale and Speedman both perform outstanding action scenes and compliment each other well. We are introduced to some new characters as well, played by some fine actors to complete the line up: Tony Curran (Marcus Corvinus), Derek Jacobi (Alexander Corvinus), Steven Mackintosh (Andreas Tanis – the exiled vampire historian).

This film was a bit better than the first if you are more into action. I liked how this one flowed from the first one and transformed into a new adventure to follow. The relationship between Selene and Michael was refreshing and not overdone; although, the love scene in the warehouse wasn’t entirely necessary to the plot. Learning more about the vampire and lycan bloodlines was indeed a plus.

Verdict: Overall, this film never brought a dull moment. With current rumors of a third installment, one must wonder just what more can be thought up for the storyline seeing as how the ending seemed so final.
