Film: X-men: The Last StandTaglineTake a Stand Plot & ActingSequels are always dangerous ground for movie makers to tread, especially with two previous box-office predecessors, but with this all-star cast you can’t really go wrong. X-Men’s third installment – The Last Stand – continues the story taking us into the not too distant future where a ‘cure’ has been found for the mutant problem. The super mutant villain, Magento, heads up The Brotherhood, an outlaw group of mutants fighting to stop the treatment. The savior, Xavier, and his X-men head up the goodies again, but with some noticeable absences, with the replacement X-men perhaps seeming a little too young to be super heros. A very welcome addition to the cast however is Kelsey Grammer, who plays Dr Henry McCoy (The Beast), a mutant who starts of working alongside the President to advice on this new cure. As with all big action/sci-fi movies, special effects play an enormous part. Because of this, seeing it on the big screen is a must. After all, where else could you get the full impact of a well-known bridge soaring through the air? Without giving any more of the plot away, it needs to be mentioned that a previously “presumed dead” character comes back to life – and she is bigger and badder than ever. Famke Janssen’s performance was without a doubt a stand out in the movie. Verdict: As an enthusiast of comic-based, special effects packed movies, it is hard for me to give a totally unbiased assessment of this movie. But I can safely say that it is a feast for the eyes without being too hard on the brain, and that, combined with an all-star cast makes for a great movie in almost anyone’s book. On a more personal note, it does however lose a point or two for not having enough of a very buff Ben Foster (of Six Feet Under fame), complete with angel wings (Oh yeah baby). |
