Live Review: Frisa Viljor, Nijmegen NLThe Swedish Daniel Johansson and Joakim Sveningsson found each other after simultaneously breaking-up with their girlfriends. After drowning their sorrows in alcohol for a while, they decided playing in a band would be more therapeutic. Thus, Friska Viljor was born. GigOMG! Visiting Doornroosje, I felt like a student again. A very old student, that is. Doornroosje is a good sized venue, old, dark and sort of industrial looking. The sound was okay, but the band didn’t pull much of a crowd in actually. With is odd in a city full of students on a Friday night. Anyway, the venue has been there forever, but people only started to come in after the band was done for the DJ-set afterwards. The band gave a short but entertaining performance, little over an hour. With a dirty long blond haired lead singer wearing a weird round English looking hat, there’s no doubt about this being an energetic fun loving Scandinavian Indie pop band. They really seemed to enjoy playing even for the small non moving crowd I was part of. Though they played well, put on a good show, interacted with de public and me having fun, this somehow felt like ‘just another Indie pop gig’. Parts of the tracks they played seemed so familiar. Maybe I’m just spoiled, but I expected something more. I always hope to be surprised during a gig of a band I’ve never seen live before. Obviously, I wasn’t. After a while it all started sounding alike, which is never good of course. Friska Viljor is at this stage of their career probably more a band playing on a outdoor festival during the afternoon. Verdict: Worth watching on a very slow weekend day |
