Live review: Wednesday 13 in Utrecht, the NetherlandsThe last time Wednesday 13 and his ghouls were in the Netherlands, it was the last show of his European Fang Bang tour. Seven months later there are two new releases – EP Bloodwork and album Skeletons – and Wednesday is back on the road to promote these. And because he is broke, which you can read more about in the interview we had with hem before the show! This time Wednesday’s SkeleTour hits Utrecht and of course we’re there to witness it. The small venue is filled with fans who have done their best to look as dead as Wednesday himself, covered in fake wounds and blood. Support act: The LooThe Loo hasn’t been named after the band’s favourite room, it’s the last name of frontman Robbie. Their fast rock ‘n’ roll doesn’t really suit the horror-vibe of Wednesday and his fans, but they are an enthusiastic bunch that clearly have a blast when they’re playing. The crowd is moderately interested, but visibly happy when they announce their last song. We’re here to see Wednesday and the sooner he gets his ass on stage the better! Wednesday 13When the stage is ready it takes a while until Wednesday and his ghouls emerge. The crowd is impatient, anxious. They roar when the band finally comes out. Naturally, a lot of songs from Skeletons are played, like Gimme Gimme Bloodshed, Not Another Teenage Anthem, Skeletons and From Here To The Hearse. The biggest fans are able to sing along, but classics like Till Death Do Us Party, Happily Ever Cadaver and I Walked With A Zombie get a bigger reaction. At the show last year, Wednesday had splurged in props. This time it’s a little more modest, but still fun! During Zombie, a zombie actually walks around on stage. This seems to be the kick off to bring out the rest of the props. During Bad Things Wednesday messes about with a male blow up doll, wearing an ‘emo my ass’ t-shirt. I Love To Say Fuck is the last song of the evening and turns the place upside down. We’d love to hear more songs, but the show is definitely over. Fortunately, workaholic Wednesday will be back in the fall, so we don’t have to wait very long! Verdict: Short but good, Wednesday 13 always turns the evening into a macabre party! |
