Finnish fusion
Apocalyptica, the Finnish band fusing metal and classical music together by playing tracks like Mettalica’s Enter Sandman on cello’s, released a live DVD in 2001. During the recorded gig they hadn’t added drums yet, so it’s four men with cello’s on stage playing covers and self-written tracks. The tracks they played during the concert are listed left.

Since the DVD release there’s been some line-up changes. The bands now exists of five men: Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, Perttu Kivilaakso and Antero Manninen playing cello and a drummer (Mikko Siren). Their music is amazing. Playing metal songs on originally intended classical instruments appears to be a bit strange, but it sounds great! By watching the DVD instead of listening to their albums, you can feel a bit of the power these men and this music generates.

This DVD pulls you right into the world of Apocalyptica. Seeing them play live is absolutely exhilarating. It can make you forget there was ever a world outside the gig venue. And even though during the encore Perttu wore a shirt which kept reminding me of a Take That video (which can’t be right), the men on stage know the effect of them playing the cello on women (yes, we all seem to wonder what those agile hands are capable of).

Though watching the live DVD isn’t the same as actually being at a concert, it is magnificently filmed!

Verdict: Fantastic. While watching the DVD you can only wish to have been there or decide to buy tickets for the first gig in your area.
